Middleburg Film Festival Day 2: At Eternity’s Gate

So, I missed Day 1 of the fest, so Day 2 is my Day 1! Started off with this biopic of Vincent Van Gogh’s last days. It’s an examination of Van Gogh’s loneliness, his love for nature, his mental health, his painting, and how those all intertwined. Willem Dafoe delivers a fine performance as Van Gogh, but the overall movie isn’t that captivating. There is too much experimentation done with the image and sound. The filmmaker is trying to get you into Van Gogh’s head and show his isolation, but it just doesn’t work.
