the Smash Bros. Diaries – Week 12 – Super Smash Bros. Ultimate (Switch) and Super Smash Bros. (N64)

On Day One I continued World of Light. It seems like a slow go on Normal, I started the day with only eight fighters unlocked and ended with only nine. And on Day Two I continued World of Light until I unlocked another character.

I don’t mind the challenges and game modifications made for some WOL events. Fighting a giant character, a mini character, or a character that starts with an item and loves to jump, those can be interesting challenges and force you to play the game differently than you normally would. What is super annoying is the “Defeat the Main Fighter” spaces. There’s always another fighter or an Assist AI that’s hounding you non-stop. The game no longer feels challenging, it’s just irritating. Sometimes you have three characters attacking you and it’s the fourth character you need to defeat. But you can’t even move because you’re always under attack. In these cases, it’s pretty much impossible to beat with Spirits off, unless you’re like a real professional Smasher.

And honestly, there were a few “no-frills” battles that didn’t seem like they were no frills. The damage the CPU did to me was much higher than the damage percentage I was dishing out. I had to turn on spirits in a few of these as well.

And my least favorite of least favorite, the stupid Stamina battles. In Stamina battles, all fighters start with a percentage and every time they get hit the percentage goes down. Once the fighter it at zero percent, they are defeated. I find Stamina battles so infuriating. You have to concentrate so much on not getting hit, and in almost every one of these stupid battles, there’s an assist trophy or secondary AI just out to get you. I know these should be looked at learning opportunities – how to attack without getting damaged, but they’re too frustrating. This week I didn’t even bother approaching any of these without Spirits On. At this point, maybe my goal should just to beat World of Light without changing the difficulty.

On Night Three I took a break from Smash. On Night Four I continued on with World of Light. Then I took another break on Night Five.

On Day Six I went back to Smash 64. I ground out self-destructs in VS. mode until I was able to unlock Item Switch. I also played a few of the 1 Stock battles as well, just so each character could have a KO on record.

After I unlocked Item Switch; I played Items off, 4 Stock, Vs. battle on Dreamland against the CPU. Starting with a Level 6 Captain Falcon, I was able to defeat him on one try. Level 7 CPU I fought about two or three times and couldn’t’ beat. I really need to find my controller for 64 and get my advanced moves down.

On Night Seven I took another break. I’m taking a lot of breaks lately because I’m kind of burned out on Smash and am I little more interested in playing other games when I have time. But I have SmashCon coming up in about two months so I need to buckle down.
