the Smash Bros Diaries – Week 3: Super Smash Bros. Melee (GameCube)

This week started out with a bang. After leaving the game on an infinite Vs. match for a while I was able to get Mewtwo’s Challenger approaching. And then was able to beat him pretty easily. Now, Mr. Game and Watch is the only character left to unlock!

Then I went into Target Test since to unlock the Dream Land level you have to defeat the Target Test for each character. I only had Dr. Mario, Jigglypuff, Young Link, Falco, Pichu, MewTwo, Roy and Marth’s left to beat. And Mr. Game and Watch once he’s unlocked.

It was more difficult than I thought it would be, I tried a while on Dr. Mario with no progress. Falco took some figuring out, but I was able to get through it after a few minutes. Pichu’s did not seem like it was really that hard, but couldn’t get it after a few tries and gave up. Mewtwo’s stage was very simple to complete. I spent a lot of time on Roy’s but could never get them all.

I’ll have to look up some walkthroughs to complete all the target tests.

Then I just suicided a number of times in VS Mode until I was able to unlcok the Kanto Skies: Poke Floats stage.

I continued to try the get the distance required on the Home Run Contest without success. I’m getting close now though, around 1100 feet.

Before I logged off for the night, I tried Event 27 Cold Armor a few times and finally defeated it! Just constan throws and smahes to the edges.

My plan for the rest of the week is to concentrate on completing the Target Tests first.

Night Two I spent most of my time in Target Test. I was able to defeat the Dr. Mario, Young Link, Roy, and Marth’s Target Tests! Pichu’s Target Test ended up being the actual hardest. I looked it up and yup, this is the hardest one by consensus. I feel like I got close on Jigglypuff, but never quite got there. But only two left to beat to unlock Mr. Game and Watch.

I played some more Home Run Contest. Got a few more feet, but not over 1300. I think I’m going to give up, the reward isn’t even a tournament legal stage.

The next night, I was planning on concentrating only on Target Tests of Jigglypuff and Pichu. Didn’t plan on actually completing them…but after a number of tries I was able to beat Jigglypuff’s Target Test. And then after what was about 45 minutes of trial and error I was able to beat Pichu’s Target Test. Which unlocked Mr. Game and Watch, who promtply wiped the floor with me, sicne Pichu is so bad.

So, I played Kirby’s Target Test, beat it quickly and then easily beat Mr. Game and Watch to unlock him. Then I beat Mr. Game and Watch’s Target Test and unlocked Superflat World” Flat Zone”. Then for some reason I went back to the home run test before I packed it in for the night.

I was out of town for a couple days, so didn’t play for two days. The last night of the week, I thought I’d concentrate on beating All Star Mode to unlock the Battefield Stage. I put it on Very Easy and knocked it out for the first time with a few continues. Next it was time to concentrate on the remaining Event Matches to unlock Final Destination. Not great progress. I had Event Matches 33 – 36 and 38 – 50 to beat still.

Originally, I was going to try each Event Match at least three times but I wasn’t really getting anywhere. The only Event Match I was able to beat was Event 41 En Garde! because for some reason Link just jumped off the stage at one point. But I’ll take it.

I decided to just play once on the remaining Events and see if I could beat any. Nope. Then I thought I’d play concentrate on the Event matches I had gotten close to completing. I tried Event 36. Space Traveler’s a number of times and got down to the last fighter Falco a few times, but never quite put him away. Pretty frustating, since Ness is my main, it should have been easy.

Then I finished the night on the all Jigglypuff Event Match 39 Jigglypuffy Live! Another struggle, was only able to get all the other Jigglypuffs down to one life. I need to come up with a strategy I think.

These event matches are very frustrating and don’t seem fair at all. I’m going to look up some guides for them, but if I’m not progresssing through them next week, I’m giving up on Final Destination.
