the Smash Bros Diaries – Week One – Super Smash Bros. (N64)

Starting out with the OG, the original Super Smash Bros. I’m playing this on the Virtual Console, on the Wii Emulator, on my WiiU. So, like an emulation of an emulation. There doesn’t seem to be any additional lag or anything, but I’m having to use the Wii Classic Controller, which isn’t the most comfortable controller for Smash. Going to try to get some Wii Classic Controller Pros on eBay or something.

So the first week started out pretty well. Didn’t have any previous saved data but it shouldn’t be too difficult to unlock everything right? Unlocked Jigglypuff right away by completing 1P Mode (called Classic Mode in subsequent games). On night one started working on unlocking Luigi by finishing all Break the Targets Bonus game with the original eight fighters. Didn’t finish them all on the first night.

On Night Two, decided to unlock Captain Falcon first. Blazed through 1P mode on Very Easy and than lost to Captain Falcon because my skills weren’t sharp. Bumped it up to Easy Mode and unlocked it the second time. Looked up some tutorials for the Breaks the Targets I was struggling with. Finished those off and unlocked Luigi.

Ness is my main in every game except 64 (Pikachu, Kirby, or Ness since this was before Kirby and Pikachu were nerfed) so I really wanted to unlock him. First time through 1P Mode on Normal difficulty with Pikachu I coasted through without any continues…and then lost handily to Ness. Decided I would also try to unlock the Classic Mushroom Kingdom level by finishing Classic Mode with all eight original characters.

The rest of the week I spent trying to get back to facing Ness. I wasn’t able to. I was able to unlock the Classic Mushroom Kingdom by beating 1P Mode with all eight original characters. I started working towards unlocking “Item Switch” which requires playing 100 VS games. I’m just playing 1 Stock and jumping off right away. Well, see if I’m more succesful in week two.

So next I’ll continue to try to get back to Ness each night, and continue dying over and over to unlock Item Switch. Maybe I can get a Wii Classic Controller Pro to help me finally unlock Ness.
