Mildred’s (Frances McDormand) daughter was raped and killed and no arrests were made after months. She rents three billboards outside her town asking the sheriff (Woody Harrelson) why. This gets attention back to her daughter’s case but also turns the whole town against her. She fights back when threatened, but sometimes she takes it to far. Sam Rockwell shines as a bad cop who eventually tries to make amends. All the performances are excellent, but it’s always McDormand’s movie, she commands every scene she’s in. It easy to see why there is Oscar buzz about this movie. This movie has a very sad premise and a few disturbing scenes, but it also has a surprising amount of humor. One of the best films at the film festival this year.
