Middleburg Film Festival Day 3: Darkest Hour

Darkest Hour is a biopic about the first few days of Winston Churchill’s Prime Ministry, during which the British Army in Europe was surrounded by the Nazis with little chance of escape. Gary Oldman transforms into Churchill, though at times he comes across as Mr. Magoo. He’s a shoo-in for an Academy Award nominee.

The movie focuses on Churchill’s eccentricities and the political in-fighting going on at the time. There are very little war-planning scenes, likely for budgetary reasons. This isn’t worst biopic I’ve ever seen, but it’s not the best either. There seems to have been more interesting things happening during this period that the movie could have focused on instead of party politics. But I suppose that’s what other movies are for.
