Paterson is the latest from indie auteur Jim Jarmusch. Jarmusch’s work can be difficult at times, but he is a great observer of character and has one of the best ears for dialogues in film. The movie follows a bus driver/amateur poet (Adam Driver) throughout one week of his life. It’s really a slice of life as the we follow him with his girlfriend, at work, with his friends after work, and as he works on his poetry. There are common story and character threads throughout the film but no over-arching story. To be honest, I’m not sure I understand what Jarmusch was going for. It may have been an examination of love, or poetry, or relationships, or everyday life, or all of those things. But it wasn’t very clear. Not that it’s important, but this and the Red Turtle were the only movies I’ve attended were no clapped at end.
