The Best of 2009 and the Best of the Decade Schedule and Thoughts

Just thought I would let everyone know the tentative schedule for the Entertainment Center’s Best of the Year Awards.

January 4th – Best WiiWare Games of the Year

January 11th – Best XBLA Games of the Year

January 25th – Best Music of the Year

February 8th  – Best Wii Games of the Year

February 15th  – Best 360 Games of the Year

March 1st  – Best Movies of the Year

These are all subject to change. They are rather spread out, but I have a lot of catching up to do in a few categories. Also I’d like to extend it to the Oscars season. Also, I’m just one person and would like to give everything worthy a fair shake.  After listening to some other sites explain their criteria for their Best of Year selections I lose respect for them. Certain sites admitted on their podcasts that some games that some editors wanted to nominate for end of the year awards were struck down because other editors hadn’t played them enough. Well, that’s sort of their job, and it sort of makes their list worthless. I’d like to be confident in my choices.

Here’s a note on best of the decade lists. Don’t expect them any time soon. Many publications released these lists before this year was even over. I think Pitchforkmedia Best Music of the Decade started in September or October. Apparently they could hear into the future. That negates their list to me to a large extent. I still have catching up to for this year, let alone this decade. I’d also like to get a bit distance between the decade and the writing of a list. The impact of certain movies, videogames, or albums lessen as time goes by and others grow in importance. For example making a Best of the Decade.. So Far list in 2005 I didn’t include the Arcade Fire’s Funeral. The importance of that album to both me and music in general as grown almost exponentially since then. Right now I’m completely smitten with Norah Jones’s the Fall. I think its her best album ever, even better than Come Away With Me. Will I still feel like that in two years? It’s hard to say.

So it’s possible that Best of Decade lists may start around June, but they may take quite a bit longer.

UPDATE: For various reasons, the dates have all been changed to Mondays.
