Giant Bomb blows up and some other influences…

So, I’ve been meaning for a while to pay tribute to all the sites and people that were my inspiration for starting this website/blog. In another post I’ll be talking about what I’m running my site on for those who are curious.

Giant Bomb is a huge inspiration to me. I really admire what those guys are doing.  That site is like a combination of Wikipedia,Facebook, Message Boards, and a gaming editorial site. Blogcritics is also huge to me. I write for them, and I think they have really helped me improve my writing. There are a lot of good writers there to check out and I really like the purpose of the site. I had an idea to have a site where all the reviews and articles were written by fans, not professional critics. There would be no deadlines to review a game or movie the day it came out, allowing writers to digest the work better and give it more of a fair shake. That is basically Blogcritics.

Part of what I really like about both sites is that they aren’t beholden to advertisers and big media companies like some other sites are. They can say what they honestly think about things and not worry about the consequences.

A problem I have with a lot of music critics, movie critics, and game journalists is that they’re too caught up in what they are writing about. They don’t have an outside perspective like an average fan would. This causes them to buy into the hype or ignore things of value. This site is my retaliation against that.

So, I really hope my site can be like those two in a way. I would really like to have a community of writers writing for the site here that have the same values but different ideas. I would really like commenters to become article writers.

I should also mention, I am also very inspired by IGN, Talking About Games, and Roger Ebert. Even if I don’t agree with their thoughts, I can tell right away whether I’ll enjoy a movie or a game.  I also like how their personalities come through, but it doesn’t dictate their work.

So, that’s just a few thoughts I had about my influences and my site.
