After the Hunt is Luca Guadagnino latest work. Julia Roberts plays Alma, a Yale philosophy professor who’s striving for tenure. Ayo Edebiri plays Maggie, her graduate assistant that is described as both brilliant and mediocre. Andrew Garfield plays Hank, a fellow philosophy professor and Alma’s best friend. The day after one of Alma’s parties, Maggie comes to Alma and accuses Hank of “crossing the line”. Alma is stuck in the middle of wanting to believe Maggie, not sure if she should abandon Hank, and worried about how the scandal might affect her career.
As the plot goes on what Alma struggles more and more with who to believe. Hank and Maggie’s accounts of what happened conflict in some ways but corroborate in others. As the days go on Hank becomes more and more unraveled and aggressive. Maggie goes public with the accusation and seems to enjoy the attention she’s getting because of it. Things become less clear for both Alma and the audience.
The movie doesn’t really give any answers. It brings up discussion points. Some may find that interesting, others may find it frustrating.
