the Smash Bros Diaries – Week 31 – Super Smash Bros. Ultimate (Switch), Super Smash Bros. Melee (GCN), Super Smash Bros. Brawl (Wii Mods)

Night One

I started Night One labbing out Ganondorf in Training Mode. Practiced some combos, practiced some kill confirms, practiced his movements. He is so slow. Then I faced three Level 5 CPUs. And it was actually hard to win since he’s so slow, but I did because his Smash attacks are so insane.

Then I went online and playing five matches in Online Quickplay as Ganondorf. I thought there was no way I would win because he’s just so slow, but I actually won twice. Both times I shouldn’t have won. I can’t remember which character I beat, but I was up two stocks, so I finished it up with a Ganoncide. I didn’t mean to do that. And then later I beat a Joker, but the Joker should have won. I hit them with two Smash attacks they really should have seen coming. I did lose the other three games. And I fought the same Sheik twice who totally manhandled me both times.

So, what did I learn about Ganondorf? Playing against him, stay out of his range. Avoid his attacks, stick and move. Dash in and combo him. He can be edge-guarded. Playing as him, a lot of attacks have armor and can’t be interrupted, set them up where your opponent is going and they’ll run into them/. if they’re very very bad. Mix up Down Smash and Up Smash to catch recoveries. If someone is faster than you, there’s nothing you can do but mix up Side B, Down B, and Down Tilt. Don’t Dair or Down B off-edge or you might kill yourself.

Then I took Young Link against a Level 2 Lucina onto a Battlefield stage form some intense practice. Practiced Bread and Butter Combos and kill confirms and some off-stage offense. I played for about 35 stocks and then was done for the night.

Nights Two – Four

I didn’t have time to play any Smash these nights.

Nights Five-Seven

So over the weekend one of my friends came over and we played a lot of Smash. We also played some other fighting games, but it mostly Smash. We started out with the Brawl mods. We played Melee first to get the feel. Then we kicked off the Brawl Mods with Project M. Then we played Legacy TE. Then we played Legacy LXP Lite. Then we played Project+. Then we finished with Smash Bros. Infinite.

We had fun, but actually played Infinite the most, trying out some of the ridiculous characters and levels. Though in the end, we both agreed if we were ever going to put time into getting better at one of them, it would be Project +.

The rest of the weekend was all Ultimate. We played Smashdown, my friend played all the High to Mid Tier Characters and I played all the Bottom tiers. We played a few regular matches each night as well.

My friend used to play Samus but he didn’t do well with her the last two times we had Smash marathons. So, we were looking for a new character for him to try out. After trying out a few of the top-tier he labbed out Palutena. But he didn’t end up using her much. He ended up staying more with Dark Samus.

And we ended playing a number of Squad Strikes. That was a lot of fun. After we played our main characters, I tried to play themes instead of just playing to win. Played all the Fire Emblem characters, then all the DLC characters, then all the Marios, etc. My friend kept beating me with Banjo & Kazooie’s Side-B. He actually beat each Fire Emblem character that way. But my Joker looked good and I actually got some KOs with Rosalina.

Alright, so I’m not sure what I’m planning to do next. I wasn’t able to attend a Local during my Holiday break and won’t have another break soon. I’m not planning on going to Smash Con next year. So, I’m not sure what to train for next. In the next two weeks, I may not have much time for Smash at all. So, it may be another week or two off of Smash.
