This is a story of divorce between a stage director, Charlie (Adam Driver), and an actress, Nicole (Scarlett Johansson). The divorce starts off civil but degrades as they attack each other’s shortcomings. They promise not to bring lawyers or their son in it, but both end up hiring lawyers and their son does get stuck in the middle.
At first your sympathetic to both characters, but as the movie progress more of both of their ugly sides show. In the end, it comes back around again.
The performances by Driver and Johansson are great, neither is afraid to play an unlikeable character or to be embarrassed. It’s a realistic look at the breakdown of a marriage.
It’s pretty brutal.
