It looks like a hard year to predict, it should be exciting on Sunday!
Best Picture
Will Win – The Shape of Water
Should Win – Three Billboards Outside of Ebbing Missouri
Snubbed – Logan, Last Flag Flying
The Shape of Water doesn’t seem like a movie we’ll be talking about years from now; Three Billboards does. Logan and Last Flag Flying were in the top 3 best movies of the year.
Best Director
Will Win – Guillermo Del Toro for the Shape of Water
Should Win – Jordan Peele for Get Out
Snubbed – Martin McDonagh for Three Billboards Outside of Ebbing Missouri
The Shape of Water is very well directed and a well told story. But Jordan Peele expertly blended horror, comedy, and social satire in Get Out.
Best Actor
Will Win – Gary Oldman in Darkest Hour
Should Win – Timothee Chalamet in Call Me By Your Name
Snubbed – Steve Carell for Last Flag Flying
This will be a career-capping win for Oldman. His Winston Churchill is nowhere near hsi greatest performance. Chalamet’s role was much more nuanced and emotional. Carell was amazing in Last Flag Flying and was definitely the snub of the year.
Best Actress
Will Win – Frances McDormand for Three Billboards Outsde of Ebbing Missouri
Should Win –Sally Hawkins for the Shape of Water
Snubbed – Jessica Chastain for Molly’s Game
McDorman is so great in Three Billboards she also deserves to win. Sally Hawkins somehow grounded a role where she played a mute who fell in love with a merman. Without Chastain Molly’s Game would not have worked.
Best Supporting Actor
Will Win – Sam Rockwell for Three Billboards Outside of Ebbing Missouri
Should Win – Sam Rockwell
Snubbed – Bryan Cranston for Last Flag Flying
Sam Rockwell will and should win this award. You both hate him and sympathize with his racist cop character who tries to redeem himself. Cranston was so watchable as the brash drunk in Last Flag Flying.
Best Supporting Actresses
Will Win – Allison Janey for I, Tonya
Should Win – Laurie Metcalf for Lady Bird
Snubbed – None
Janey was incredibly entertaining as Tonya Harding’s abusive mother. But Laurie Metcalf played a much harder role to pull off, a normal a mom trying to do her best.
Best Original Screenplay
Will Win – Get Out
Should Win – Get Out
Snubbed – None
Get Out was the best Screenplay and it will win.
Best Adapted Screenplay
Will Win – Call Me By Your Name
Should Win – Logan
Snubbed – Last Flag Flying
Call Me By Your Name will win this category even though the actul story is not that satisfying. Logan finally gave us the Wolverine adaption we’ve always wanted.
Best Animated Feature
Will Win – Coco
Should Win – Coco
Snubbed – the Lego Ninjango Movie
I haven’t all three of the domestic hits that were nominated, but Coco was the most impressive animated film I saw in 2017. The Lego Ninjago Movie was a really fun, self-aware movie, even for adults.
