I, Tonya tries to be a Goodfellas/Wolf of Wall Street telling of the Tonya Harding story. It follows the lives of Harding (Margot Robbie) and her sometimes husband Jeff Gilooly (Sebastian Stan) until the fallout of the Nancy Kerrigan incident. Anyone alive in the 90s will remember the incident – where Olympic figure skater Nancy Kerrigan was attacked and her rival Harding was accused of being involved.
Harding and Gilooly tell their stories directly to the audience as if the movie is an interview. The movie seems to be trying to get you to feel sympathetic for Harding.
This movie has it’s funny parts and in many ways it does make you feel sorry for Tonya Harding. But it also constantly reminded you of better movies.
