In 2003, Larry (Steve Carrell) is a Vietnam vet, whose son was just killed in Iraq. He looks up two of his war buddies Sal (Bryan Cranston) and Richard (Laurence Fishburne) to help him bury his son. It’s a hybrid road/getting the band back together movie. The vets relate to each other how the war still affects them and they draw parallels to the situation in the second Iraq War.
This was a enjoyable movie. There are definite themes of brotherhood and mistrust of the government, but they are weaved into the story subtly. Cranston really steals the show here as the uncouth Sal who’s not afraid to say anything.
