German/Austrian director Michael Haneke is known for his hard to watch films such as A’mour and Funny Games.
After Eve’s (Fantine Harduin) mother overdoses on painkillers she goes to live with her Dad (Mathieu Kassovitz). Her Dad lives in the family mansion where her grandmother Anne (Isabelle Huppert) rules as matriarch. After Eve moves in the family’s darker secrets start to come out.
This may not be a hard to watch as A’mour, but it’s not exactly a fun watch either. There are no characters to root for, and it takes some time to figure out what’s going on. A lot of scenes come across as fragments or pieces, you don’t know who talking to who, or what exactly is happening. Once all the puzzle pieces come together you might not care, since every character is so unpleasant.
