Custody follows a young mother’s (Catalina Sandino Moreno) struggle to get her children back after an incident/accident at home causes Child Series to take them away from her. It’s quite a deep and layered movie. None of the characters are one-dimensional. The mother, her lawyer (Hayden Panettiere), and the judge (Viola Davis) each have their own stories. The mother is a hard working immigrant but she isn’t idealized. Her character is sympathetic but her faults are shown, as well as how she played a part in losing custody of her children. Even the opposing lawyers and government official aren’t bad guys, they’re trying to do what they think is right first. A powerful movie.
