Ok, I know I said the last post was the “final” post for the 2015 Wrestling awards, but here a few more minor awards. And spoilers I guess, if you don’t want to know what happened in professional wrestling last year.
Best Storyline of the Year – WWE: Roman Reigns vs the Authority
It’s an open secret that in real life the WWE brass are trying to make Reigns their next Franchise Player. But a lot of the “smarks” hate Roman Reigns and cheer on everyone else instead. So, the whole storyline where Reigns won the belt, lost the belt, and then re-won the belt fighting uphill against the Authority was incredibly smart. It helped get almost all of the fans behind Roman.
Worst Storyline of the Year – TNA: Global Force Wrestling “Hostile Takeover” of TNA
Ugh. Where to start on how awful this was. Jeff Jarrett’s new promotion Global Force Wrestling doesn’t seem to be doing well, so I understand why some cross-promotion on TNA Impact would be beneficial. But it was not at all. The whole thing felt distasteful. It turned Jarrett into a huge heel in TNA right after they had just made him a Hall of Famer. The “Hostile Takeover” angle and the fight for control between TNA President Dixie Carter and Jarrett felt too close to perceived real-life struggles between the two. Having Jarrett’s wife, who is also TNA star Kurt Angle’s ex-wife, as a huge part of the storyline didn’t sit well either. And finally, it did a terrible job of promoting GFW. GFW came across as a whole company of d-bags who couldn’t even outwrestle the TNA roster. So thanks, no one ever needs to watch what must be a terrible product.
Best Twist of the Year – Lucha Underground: Vampiro is Pentagon Jr’s “Master”
In hindsight, it seems so obvious. But the reveal during Ultima Lucha was so great and came across as so crazy. Pentagon Jr. kept calling out Vampiro over and over again. Vampiro kept replying he was no longer a wrestler, no longer a dark guy. But then he finally agreed to the match. Then after Pentagon Jr. beat him, Vampiro revealed himself as Pentagon Jr’s master. Then Vampiro ordered Pentagon Jr. to break his arm.
