A good issues film. Carey Mulligan is good in the main character role; but I wouldn’t say it’s an Oscar winning performance. Meryl Streep is in it for only one scene; but she’ll probably still get an Oscar nominee. And it’s a very showy, stagy performance.
The filmmakers do a great job of building sympathy for the women in this film. Brendan Gleeson also does a nicely nuanced performance as a police inspector who’s not sympathetic to the woman but he’s not a carton villain either.
It’s a good movie, but I wouldn’t say it’s as powerful as Selma.
