For some reason Nintendo did not see fit to release anything for the Virtual Console on Monday. There are now over 300 games available, yet there are still some absolute essentials missing from the lineup. Here is a list of 5 that should already be on the US Virtual Console Store.
N64 –Super Smash Bros: Surely every Nintendo fan has played this melee fighter and its’ sequels. This was the first mascot brawler that mattered, and it is still considered the best by some.
SNES – Super Mario Kart: It’s been said that Nintendo launched the Kart-racing genre with this title. While it only allowed for two players to go head-to-head, those who grew up on it swear it remains the best of the series.
NES – Duck Hunt: This light-gun shooter was a B-side to Super Mario Bros. for many. It was a simple game, involving shooting ducks and a laughing dog, but it provided hours of fun. For many gamers it was their first encounter with a shooting mechanic. The game play would transfer beautifully to the Wii-Remote.
NES – Final Fantasy: Nearly every RPG owes something to this game, but many people have probably not played it. The Virtual Console should be a place to catch up on our gaming history.
N64 – Goldeneye 007: The first console first-person shooter to become popular, this game was played at seemingly every party in the late 90s. Would Halo and Gears of War exist without Goldeneye? Maybe not.
There are many more games missing from the Virtual Console, these are just the most egregious. What essentials are you still waiting for?
