Middleburg Film Festival – Day 3: Carol

Carol is about an affair between two women in the 1950s. They try to keep it clandestine but are unable to and  the title character Carol pays for it. Cate Blanchett has a mysterious magnetism in the title role that sometimes makes you think she’s not the good guy in the movie. Rooney Mara plays the younger women that falls under her spell believably.

But the rest of the movie is not great. It’s another long, slow-moving indie without a satisfying ending. The men in the movie are trying to period appropriate but they come us as cartoon characters.

C’mon, Cate Blanchett! Your movies are 0 for 2 this year.
